Immersive audio journey
through interwar Kaunas

“From Freedom Avenue to Freedom”

Embark on an immersive audio journey through interwar Kaunas, where two diplomats – Jan Zwartendijk and Chiune Sugihara – issued thousands of Visas for Life to Jewish refugees, saving them from almost certain death.

How does it work?

To experience the journey, you will need a smartphone or tablet and a pair of headphones.

  1. Download the VoiceMap app from Google Play or the App Store.

  2. Allow the app to use your GPS so it can follow your location during the tour.

  3. Create an account or log in if you already have one.

  4. Search for the tour “From Freedom Avenue to Freedom” and tap the "FREE" button to download it.

  5. Once the tour is downloaded, go to the starting point – the fountain on Laisvės Alėja.

  6. In the app, press “Start Tour” and immerse yourself in the story.

Route and Duration

The journey starts at the fountain on Laisvės Alėja, continues along the boulevard with a stop at the former Dutch Honorary Consulate, and ends at the Sugihara House Museum in Žaliakalnis.

The full experience takes about 30 minutes. We recommend wearing comfortable shoes, dressing appropriately for the weather, and walking the route on foot – retracing the paths once taken by refugees in search of survival.

Languages and Price

The journey is available in English from May 23, and in Lithuanian from September 2. It is free of charge for Kaunas residents and visitors.

Creators

This audio journey was created by the Sugihara Foundation “Diplomats for Life” in collaboration with the Embassy of the Netherlands in Lithuania. Concept and direction by British artists Jenny Kagan and Louise Wilson.
